Edward Snowden, a former CIA employee and “Prismgate” whistleblower, helped launch the privacy coin Zcash in 2016. Snowden launched the Zcash blockchain with six others, including Zcash creator Zooko Wilcox, Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd, and Coin Center research director Peter Van Valkenburgh. In a process known as a “trusted setup,” in which the six participants each received a small portion of the private keys needed to create a cryptocurrency, Snowden had previously used the pseudonym “John Dobbertin” to hide his role. Despite his involvement in the creation of the privacy coin, Snowden reportedly received no cryptocurrency or any other material compensation.

The Central African Republic has legally recognised the use of cryptocurrencies after its president approved a law passed by delegates last week that also made bitcoin the official currency of the African country alongside the West African CFA franc. BTC is up 1.4% over the last 24 hours and has risen to an intraday high of $40,373.09. The largest cryptocurrency rose above the $40,000 price level in the evening, but the bulls failed to maintain the price above it, suggesting traders are selling on rallies. As BTC has been trading between $37,000 and $45,000 in the past few weeks, the sideway trading will likely continue.
